Sending your child to a kids after school class, kids camp or a kids activity has so many hidden benefits. Of course, it’s wonderful for your child to take part in the actual activity, but there are lots of other hidden gems available through these sorts of engagements.
This series of blogs explores some of these wonderful life-skills. So far we have covered off decision making skills, building self-esteem and confidence, developing social skills, making friendships, working as a team and thinking strategically. And now onto passion!
Passion fills our lives with meaning, happiness and excitement; it’s the thing that keeps us going. And it’s no different for children.
Psychologist Peter Gray explains “that time is needed to make friends, play with ideas and materials, experience and overcome boredom, learn from one’s own mistakes, and develop passions”.
It is so important for us to give our children the opportunity and time to explore themselves without pressure or limits. And there is no better way than to offer them a variety of opportunities so that they can find their passion and feel excited and enthusiastic about something.
Instead of just doing something because everyone else is doing it, take time to really understand what your child is interested in… ask lots of questions and watch how they play. One of the greatest benefits of after school activities or holiday camps are that they can provide such varied environments for your child to explore what really lights a fire inside them.
Not only will this be wonderful for your child in terms of their day to day satisfaction, but it will also help to keep them focussed, and this can be so helpful to them as they grow up and become teenagers.
