Why is Reading so Important
We probably all know that reading is really important for our little ones. But have you thought about why? In a nutshell, here are 7 reasons why I believe your child should read and be encouraged to read.
Reading is a fairly complex task for the rain, and far more complex than watching TV. Neuroscientists have now proven that we can actually improve the function of our brain through reading as it increases connectivity in the brain.
Reading improves concentration and this is such an important tool to learn in this every moving electronic world of ours. It actually takes a bit of training to remain focussed on one thing when there is so much stimulus around us. The more your children read, the longer they will be able to read for.
Reading teaches children about the world around them and enables them to experience society more broadly; the rich tapestry of cultural and historical references. By reading stores about other countries children are exposed to other ways of life, other ideas and other beliefs.
Reading improves vocabulary and leads to more highly developed language skills. As your child advances in his or her reading skills, he or she is exposed to richer vocabulary and also has the opportunity to unconsciously absorb grammar and syntax.
Reading develops imagination because when we read, our brains translate the description of the words into pictures in our minds. We imagine how the characters are feeling. And we use our own experience to imagine how we would feel in that situation.
Reading helps to develop empathy because the child is able to identify with the characters they are reading about. This links to the point above, where they imagine how they would feel in a particular situation.
Reading actually relaxes the body and calms the mine… in our busy worlds full of mobile phones and computers it seems that we have forgotten how to be silent and how shut out the stimulus. Reading is a lovely way to do this… It is so important to take time out to read because our brains are being stressed and overworked with all the technical overload. A good paperback book is what I recommend! Why
There are so many more reasons why children should read, and reading can be a good way to connect and share time with your child, either reading to them, or reading beside them.
